3.3.2 Initializing the Kernel

The catalog kernel must be initialized before the catalog can be used. In practice, whenever a rebuild or drastic restructing is effected, you will need to rebuild the kernel.

Note that initial data collection and definition of the outer structure as well as some steps of batching don't access the catalog and therefore the initialization of the kernel can be deferred.

If you are installing the sample data, you should go ahead intialize the kernel. This and the processes of the next three sections involve the ``Build E-Catalog'' branch from the main switchboard shown below.

When you select ``Do-It'' you will see a series of informative messages and warnings. Toward the end of this series you will be asked if you want to send customer and user info to the catalog. When installing the sample data, you should OK this.
